Printing Trials

After trialling the etchings and screen prints, I have decided to use only screen printing within the piece. I really like how definite the prints turn out using this process. I am also happy with the ability to print shaped images rather than rectilinear (the etching plate).

I have also decided on the images that will be printed. These are images from within the womb. I will include a mix of images such as a close up of the foetus and development of the baby, shape of the ovum (cell close up), blastocyst etc.

I have experimented with these images as a screen print on the Stonehenge paper. A photo of this is below.

In this experiment, I have used white and a very light pink. I am happy with this combination as I feel it emphasises the fragility of the work.

Ecoteriors

Corinne Young is a very talented textile artist who has founded a very unique business, 'Ecoteriors'. Young is interested in textiles as well as interior designing.  She creates beautiful interior items and artworks using materials such as fair-trade organic materials, furniture pieces as well as recycled and vintage fabrics.

Young also creates inspiring wearable art pieces.

These wearable art pieces are beautiful! The colours used are subtle and work well with the natural feel of the work. These are great examples of unexpected wearable art and is therefore very interesting to the viewer.

My Piece

I have decided to create a wearable piece using the idea of an artist book. This piece will be in the form of a choker (necklace) and will focus on the fragility of pregnancy. I have been inspired by Brown's work, and also my sister who is currently pregnant.

The pages of this 'book' will be shaped as a stylised womb and will have a height of approximately 5cm, as drawn below:

I am currently interested in combining screen printing and etching within this piece to print development images from within the womb. These images should be printed in white and very light pink to emphasise the concept of fragility and femininity.

I will use stonehenge paper for this work as it is able to be printed on without the paper rippling with the paint.  This will hold its shape well.

I have sketched how the wearable 'book' will look once it is completed. The piece will be constructed from a long piece of the stonehenge paper, which will be folded in a concertina style. This is shown below:

Alison Cooke Brown

I have been inspired by Brown's artist book cuffs. These are examples of unexpected wearable art created by everyday materials. Paper, silver and beads have been used on this piece.

The below is another cuff created by Brown. This cuff has verses of a love poem by Emily Dickinson printed on the pages. The materials include calico, paper, wire, muslin, button and cord.

Ideas For My Piece

I would like to do a wearable art piece. Themes I am interested in:

  • Femininity
  • Fragility
  • Pregnancy
Possible media areas and ideas:

  • feathers sewn onto a wearable piece
  • body adornment
  • Jewellery made from unexpected materials
  • wearable artist 'book' (necklace, choker, bracelet) - this is an unexpected combination for the viewer
I enjoy working with pastels, printmaking and sewing. I would like for this piece to be a very pretty piece, perhaps in baby blues and pinks. These are colours that I normally do not work with.

Spatial Experience

Spatial experience in an art context refers to the importance of space as part of the artwork. It also emphasises that the audience is an active participant in installations and performance based art. Artists who are interested in the spatial experience of their work often create 3D forms such as installations, fibre art, wearable art and body adornment which are displayed in natural, urban and public spaces. Digital media such as film, animation, sound art and electronic imaging are also mediums explored through spatial construction.

I am interested in wearable art and am inspired by the work of 'Psycho Girlfriend', a collaborative effort from artists Vanessa Bonet and Kasey McMahon. Below are some of their pieces:

These artists are interested in links between the technological and natural, as well as exposing the viewer to unfamiliar and uncomfortable situations.
